My family immigrated to the United States from England when I was seven years old. We settled in Allston, Massachusetts where my father worked as a waiter and my mother was employed as a secretary. Eventually my father worked his way up to the position of Banquet Manager and my mother became an Assistant Dean at Northeastern University.

After serving four years in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man during the Vietnam era, I attended Harvard College on a scholarship and subsequently attended Harvard Business School. In the first half of my career I was an investment banker and launched the startup of Goldman Sachs’ Asia Pacific Mergers Advisory businesses which I managed from Tokyo, Japan.

In 1998, my family and I moved to Chapel Hill for the quality of life. My wife Jill and I have been married for 24 years and are the proud parents of Zack, a sophomore at UNC, and Harrison, a high school sophomore. Over the last 13 years I have held positions in a variety of entrepreneurial companies, such as, Chief Financial Officer of Pozen; a public biotech company based in Chapel Hill, Aldagen, a biotech company working in regenerative medicine, and with Megawatt Solar, a renewable energy company founded by a consortium of UNC scientists. Additionally, I was a key member of a team assembled to restructure AAI Pharma, headquartered in Wilmington, NC. Currently I am Chief Executive Officer of NextRay Inc. which is developing a new approach to x-rays using technology developed at Brookhaven National Labs and UNC. IN 2010 I also had the privilege of spending two months in Haiti working with Sean Penn’s J/P Haiti Relief Organization following the devastating earthquake there.

I was first elected to Chapel Hill Town Council in 2007 and serve or have served on the following Town Boards and Advisory Committees.
